"Created in the Image of God"

We thank God for another Sunday, another breath, another chance to live and move and have our being. Life itself is a gift. And when we begin with gratitude, something shifts in us. We remember: God is good. And we are blessed.
But here’s the question that stirred my heart:
What does it really mean to be created in the image and likeness of God?
God Is Not a Man
In Book of Numbers 23:19, Scripture says:
“God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent…”
Before we can understand His image in us, we must understand this: God is not human in the way we are human. He is not moody, inconsistent, or unstable. He does not bless and then change His mind.
And here’s the shouting part: What God has blessed cannot be reversed.
Before you were born. Before you made a mistake. Before you had a bad day.
He blessed you.
Made in His Image — But What Does That Mean?
In Book of Genesis 1:26–27, God says:
“Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…”
This isn’t about physical appearance. God is Spirit (John 4:24). He is not confined to form or flesh.
So “image” and “likeness” must mean something deeper.
It means:
We carry His nature.
We reflect His character.
We have His divine imprint.
His breath is in us.
When God breathed into Adam, He wasn’t just animating a body — He was imparting Himself. The DNA of God is on the inside of humanity.
The problem isn’t that we weren’t created in His image. The problem is we often live from our flesh instead of our divine nature.
Christ: The Visible Image of the Invisible God
Epistle to the Colossians 1:15 tells us that Christ is:
“the image of the invisible God.”
Jesus didn’t just talk about God — He demonstrated Him.
Where there was hatred, He sowed love.
Where there was exclusion, He sat down at the table.
Where there was accusation, He offered mercy.
Where there was revenge, He chose forgiveness.
He showed us what the image looks like in action.
And here’s the beautiful truth:
We are growing into that same likeness.
Image Is Something You Grow Into
Being created in God’s image doesn’t mean instant maturity. It means potential.
Paul writes that we are renewed according to the image of Him who created us (Colossians 3:10). That means transformation is ongoing.
We must:
Put off anger.
Put off malice.
Put off old patterns.
Put on the new self.
Before you can put something on, you must take something off.
Spiritual growth isn’t about pretending. It’s about alignment.
Spiritual Alignment: Living From the Inside Out
In Acts of the Apostles 17:28, it says:
“For in Him we live and move and have our being.”
That’s alignment.
It means my inner values, my beliefs, and my actions are in harmony with God.
Prayer becomes alignment. Stillness becomes alignment. Choosing peace over retaliation becomes alignment.
When someone mistreats you and you choose not to strike back — Christ is maturing in you.
When you pray for someone who hurt you — Christ is maturing in you.
When you respond instead of react — Christ is maturing in you.
You Are the Only Christ Some Will Ever See
That’s sobering.
People may never read a Bible. But they will read you.
The question becomes:
What is my reaction revealing?
What is my speech producing?
What atmosphere follows me?
Jesus said follow Me — not just in belief, but in behavior.
The Fruit Proves the Root
In Epistle to the Galatians 5:22–23, we are told the fruit of the Spirit is:
Love
Joy
Peace
Longsuffering
Kindness
Goodness
Faithfulness
Gentleness
Self-control
A tree does not strain to bear fruit. It simply abides in its source.
If we are rooted in Christ, fruit becomes natural.
Imagine living in such a way that:
Someone can take peace from you when they need it.
Someone can experience joy just by being around you.
Someone can feel safe enough to breathe in your presence.
That’s image-bearing.
Mature Love Is the Evidence
Growth looks like this:
You don’t stay mad for seven years.
You don’t rehearse old wounds.
You don’t live in reaction.
You don’t perform spirituality — you embody it.
The old self reacts. The renewed self responds.
The old self retaliates. The renewed self releases.
And when you can pray for someone who once wounded you — you know something has changed.
Stop Performing. Start Being.
We’ve made this too complicated.
Christ in you is not striving. Christ in you is not anxious. Christ in you is not insecure.
You don’t have to perform righteousness. You grow into it.
You don’t have to prove worthiness. You were blessed before you arrived.
You don’t have to chase identity. You were created with it.
Life Is Good — Just Be
Being made in God’s image means:
You are relational.
You are creative.
You are morally aware.
You are capable of divine love.
You carry peace within you.
It means you can wake up and say:
I am blessed.
I am enough.
I am loved.
I am aligned.
I am growing.
I am reflecting Him.
Because before your days were written, He spoke blessing over you.
And what He has blessed cannot be reversed.
Final Thoughts
This is not about becoming someone else. It’s about becoming who you already are.
Christ in you — the hope of glory.
So today, take the stress off.
Just be.
Move in Him. Live in Him. Have your being in Him.
And let the image of God grow up inside you.
