Renewing Our Minds and Seeing God Clearly

Main Theme

The way we see God, ourselves, and the world affects the way we live.

We all live in the same world, but we respond to life differently because we see circumstances through different “lenses.” Our thoughts, beliefs, and experiences can create strongholds that influence how we understand God, ourselves, and others.

God renews our minds and teaches us to see through the lens of truth.

1. The Battle Begins in the Mind

We can experience similar circumstances but respond very differently. What we believe internally affects whether we can say, “It is well with my soul.”

Strongholds can develop from:

  • Thoughts and beliefs about ourselves

  • Beliefs about God

  • Past experiences

  • Things we have become convinced are true

Key Principle

Changing the way we think can change the way we experience life.

2. Renewing the Mind Takes Time

Compare our minds to a cow chewing its cud returning to something repeatedly and processing it again.

We often need to hear God's truth repeatedly before it becomes deeply established in us.

Transformation is usually a process. The Holy Spirit knows where we are and leads us one step at a time.

3. It’s Okay to Be Me

During a women's retreat, the speaker sensed the words:

“It’s okay to be me.”

That truth brought freedom from comparison and insecurity.

God created each person uniquely. We don't have to communicate with God, worship, or live exactly like someone else.

Key Truth

God did not make a mistake when He made you.

4. Your Starting Point Matters

The message asks:

What truths form your salvation framework?

Our understanding of salvation affects how we see:

  • God

  • Ourselves

  • Our failures

  • Our circumstances

  • Our relationship with God

If our foundation is distorted, the rest of our thinking can become distorted as well.

5. The Wrong Lenses

The Separation Lens

“I am separated from God, and I have to find my way back to Him.”

Psalm 139 reminds us that God's presence is not limited by our circumstances.

Better Lens:

God is with us.

We don't have to live as though God is distant or unreachable.

The Performance Lenses

“I have to perform well enough for God to accept me.”

This creates an endless list of requirements—more prayer, more effort, more spiritual activity, and always the fear that we haven't done enough.

Galatians 2:20–21 points us toward righteousness through Christ rather than through our performance.

Better Lens:

We don't earn God's acceptance through performance.

The Angry-God Lens

“God is fundamentally angry with me.”

If we believe this, we will naturally relate to God through fear.

But 1 John 4:18 says:

“Perfect love casts out fear.”

And 1 Corinthians 13 describes love as patient, kind, and not keeping a record of wrongs.

Better Lens:

God's character is revealed through love, not fear.

6. Jesus Is More Than a “Get Out of Hell” Card

The message challenges us to see salvation as more than a future destination.

Jesus said:

“I came that they might have life.”

Galatians 2:20 says:

“It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.”

Key Truth

Christ is not simply our future rescue; He is our life now.

7. Salvation Is Relationship, Not a Formula

Salvation is not a transaction.”

We can sometimes treat salvation as a formula—say the right words, do the right things, and make sure we did everything correctly.

But salvation is relationship with a Person.

God knows us, understands us, and walks with us.

Hebrews 10 speaks of God putting His laws into our hearts.

Jesus summarized God's law as:

Love God and love your neighbor as yourself.

8. The Lens of Union

The better framework is:

God is with me.

The message emphasizes that God is:

  • Present

  • Powerful

  • Peaceful

  • Secure

  • Able to meet our needs

When we live from the knowledge that God is with us, we can face circumstances differently.

Key Thought

We don't have to create what is already true. We learn to live from what is already true.

Final Thought

Ask God to clean your lens so you can see yourself, your circumstances, and God the way He truly is.

God is with you. You don't have to earn His love. You don't have to become someone else. Learn to live from what is already true.
