The Original Blueprint: Discovering God’s Design for Your Life

This morning, I brought props—blueprints. Actual, rolled-up architect-stamped blueprints of an apartment building my family built years ago. As I looked at them, something leaped in my heart: this is what God has been saying the whole time.

The Mirror Bible often uses the phrase “the original blueprint”—the design God had in mind for humanity before anything ever went wrong. And as I prayed about what to share today, that phrase kept singing inside me. So let’s explore it together.

Blueprints Have Layers — So Do We

The blueprints I borrowed had multiple pages:

  • One layer showing the water lines and plumbing

  • Another marking the sanitary sewer

  • Another showing the front and rear elevation of the building

Each layer reveals a different aspect of the same structure. You don’t see the final building yet, but the plan is all there complete, detailed, intentional.

Your life has layers too.

  • Your physical genetics

  • Your temperament and personality quirks

  • Your history, talents, wiring

  • And most importantly: God’s image in you—you’re in-Christ DNA

Every layer is known, planned, and intentionally designed by God. But the truest, deepest, most foundational layer is the one that looks like Jesus, because Scripture says we were created in Him and through Him from the very beginning.

When contractors get confused, they return to the blueprint. When our lives get confused, messy, or out of shape, we return to the Master Architect.

He doesn’t look at the crooked walls we’ve built in fear or self-protection and say, “Well, that’s a disaster—condemn it.”No, He says:

“Let’s go back to the blueprint. This is what I intended. This is who you really are.”

And then—gently, faithfully—He helps us tear down what doesn’t belong and rebuild what does.

Genesis 1: The First Look at the Blueprint

“So, God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” —Genesis 1:27

No one was left out.No one was created without purpose. No one was created sub-par, lacking, or somehow “less” in God’s image.

Male and female are equally image-bearers.We were created for union—with God and with one another—because God Himself is union: Father, Son, and Spirit.

You can’t pluck God out of your DNA any more than you can pull rungs out of a ladder and expect it to stand. His likeness is woven into the essence of who you are.

The serpent’s lie in the garden was that God was holding something back—that Eve wasn’t already like God. But she was. We are.The lie isn’t that we’re sinners; the lie is that we are anything less than who God created us to be.

When God looked at humanity, He said:

“Very good.”

If God is good (and we declare He is), then the beings He created in His image cannot be defined as anything less.

Dominion: God’s Confidence in His Creation

Right after creating humanity, God said:

“Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it…”

He entrusted the earth to humanity because He had confidence in His design. He doesn’t delegate authority to those He doesn’t believe in.

Dominion is not harshness—it is stewardship, cultivation, creativity, and partnership with Him. We were made for this.

And we weren’t made to do it alone. God knew from the beginning Adam and Eve needed relationship with Him in order to thrive. So do we.

The New Testament Confirms the Blueprint Still Stands

Romans 8:29

“Predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son…”

The Mirror Bible beautifully paraphrases:

“He engineered us from the start to be jointly fashioned in the same mold and image of His Son… the original and intended pattern of our lives preserved in the Son.”

Jesus is the authentic prototype of humanity—not a divine trick, not an unreachable ideal. He is what humanity was always meant to look like.

Hebrews 2:11

“For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one…”

Meaning: Jesus calls us family—without shame. We come from the same Source. That’s how close the blueprint is.

Ephesians 1:4

“He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world…”

Before failures.Before sin.Before mistakes.Before trauma.

Your blueprint existed before the fall.

Jesus is God’s mind made up about you.

Ephesians 2:10

“We are His workmanship…”

The Greek word for workmanship is poiēma—poetry. You are God’s poem. You are engineered by design to display the beauty of His character in everyday life.

Fully equipped. Fully capable. Fully held.

What Does This Blueprint Look Like?

If God is love, and Jesus is the exact image of the Father, then the blueprint of our identity looks like 1 Corinthians 13.

The Mirror Bible paraphrases it powerfully:

  • Love is relentlessly patient.

  • Love is kind.

  • Love has no need to make others feel inferior.

  • Love doesn’t seek applause.

  • Love does not act out of character.

  • Love finds no joy in injustice.

  • Love is a fortress where others feel protected, not exposed.

  • Love never loses hope.

  • Love remains constant in contradiction.

And if you read that list and think, “I don’t look like that,” welcome to the club.

None of us are “fully finished buildings” yet. Some walls are missing. Others are crooked. Some rooms have plumbing fixtures in the wrong place entirely.

But the blueprint still stands. And God is holding the hammer with you, saying:

“Let’s take this wall down today. Let’s rebuild with truth.”

This is how transformation happens—not by striving, but by union with Him.

Walk With the Master Architect

You don’t need to worry about being in the “right place at the right time” or magically discovering your destiny. That’s striving—and striving never built a Christ-shaped life.

Here is the simple, beautiful way:

Do what’s in front of you today,in relationship with Him,and He will shape everything else.

He is the Master Carpenter. We are not.

The Best Place You Can Be

Christ in you.You in Christ.Face-to-face with the Father.

That is your permanent address.

And no mistake, trauma, fear, or lie has more authority than Jesus. His name is above every name—including your past.

A Prayer

Father, thank You for Your original blueprint for our lives.Thank You that You never lose sight of who we truly are, even when we do.Thank You for tearing down lies and rebuilding us with truth. We praise You for Your goodness woven into the very DNA of our being.Amen.
